Toby Ellen French, MA, LMFT, ATR has been practicing psychotherapy for 20 years. Her ongoing work as a therapist, artist, teacher, and chef reflect a life-long commitment to understanding and nurturing the human spirit. Toby brings humor, compassion, acceptance, and a lively practicality to her work.
Toby has a dual background in Art Therapy and Counseling Psychology. She combined her study of the prominent schools of psychology – psychodynamics, behaviorism and humanism – with training in the expressive arts and body-based therapies. As an artist herself, she understood that there are powerful non-verbal ways to enter into ameaningful therapeutic process.
Toby has specialist training in the treatment of the major mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, bi-polar, major depression and anxiety disorders. As a member of an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, clinical social workers and occupational therapists, she gained the know-how to diagnose and respond effectively to people affected by these illnesses.
Toby’s work is enlivened by new developments in psychotherapy that synthesize neuroscience, psychology, and the creative process. She specializes in working with couples using Emotionally Focused Therapy, sometimes referred to as “the science of love”. EFT was developed in recent decades as a way of making practical use of breakthroughs in research into the brain and human relationships and is a powerful tool for building intimacy, connection, and understanding in relationships.
